Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q. What is a Pinched Nerve?
A. “Pinched nerve” is a term that is often used to describe a pain, or uncomfortable sensation in the neck, back, or other joints of the body. In its correct definition, a pinched nerve is used to describe pressure or irritation to a nerve by its surrounding tissues (bones, muscles, ligaments, cartilage, etc.). However, in my experience, the term “pinched nerve” is frequently misused to self-diagnose a condition. If you are experiencing pain or other symptoms in the neck, back or other joints of the body and suspect you may have a pinched nerve, a chiropractic exam is your first step to relief.
Q. What are common “Pinched Nerve” symptoms?
A. Here are some common ways people describe symptoms from a pinched nerve; sharp pain, aching pain, burning pain, shooting pain, muscle spasms, pain the travels, radiating pain, numbness and tingling, pins and needles. All of these symptoms can occur any place in the body where the pinch nerve is present. In extreme cases, pinched nerves can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, changes in heart rate, breathing difficulty, and other serious symptoms. Remember, the nerves in your body control and coordinate the function of every cell, tissue and organ. Abnormal pressure on a nerve can cause malfunction wherever that nerve goes.
Q. What causes a pinched nerve?
A. Although there are many different things that can cause a pinch nerve in the body, some of the most common include:
· trauma (fall, car accident or work injury)
· degenerative changes to joints over many years
· repetitive injuries – jobs or activities that put stress on joints over-and-over again (computer work, plumbers, carpenters, manicurists, athletes, etc.)
The following is a list of common conditions that involve pinched nerves:
· Sciatica – compression of the sciatic nerve (or nerve root that contributes to the sciatic nerve) causing pain, numbness, tingling, and sometimes muscle weakness into the buttock, and leg (along the side or in the hamstring).
· Disc Herniation – a spinal disc that has moved out of its normal position causing pressure on a nerve root.
· Carple Tunnel – compression of the median nerve causing pain and numbness in your wrist hand and fingers.
· Subluxation – misalignment of a spinal bone that puts pressure on the adjacent nerve.
These can be serious conditions if ignored for too long. Waiting for a pinched nerve to get better can cause serious nerve damage if not addressed quickly. Call your Chiropractor for immediate relief!
Q. What are treatment options for a “pinched nerve”?
A.
· Rest
· Chiropractic
· Ice/heat
· Massage
· NSAIDs (i.e. ibuprofen, Motrin)
· Aspirin, acetaminophen
· Physical Therapy

Q. How Chiropractic treatment for pinched nerves can help?
A. Chiropractic treatment re-aligns the spinal bones into proper position eliminating nerve pressure and irritation. When performed by a board certified Chiropractor, relief of pain and symptoms associated with pinched nerves is very common. My success rate with pinch nerve relief is outstanding! Don’t wait another minute if you or a loved one is suffering. You’ve come to the right place for help.
Q. What can I expect at my first visit to the Chiropractor?
A. An initial visit to our office will always begin with a warm welcome. A thorough history will be reviewed with the Doctor to determine the patient’s chief complaints, symptomatic review, and current and past health issues. An examination will then follow, checking range of motion, muscle and bone palpation, and any necessary orthopedic or neurological tests. X-rays will also be taken when warranted. Before performing any treatments, we take great pride in a explaining the x-rays findings, diagnosis, and if the condition can be helped with Chiropractic care.
