Everything You Need to Know About
Whiplash
Q. What is a Whiplash?
A. Whiplash is a non medical term to describe injury to the muscles, ligaments, tendons of the neck. Whiplash is often referred to as hyperflexion/hyperextension injury or acceleration/deceleration injury. Any time the head and neck are quickly forced forward and then backward, you risk suffering from whiplash.
Q. How do I know if I have a Whiplash?
A. Whiplash can only be properly diagnosed with a thorough history and examination by a physician. If you are experiencing pain or other symptoms in the head, neck, shoulders, or upper extremities, and suspect you may have whiplash, a chiropractic exam is your first step to relief.
Q. What are common whiplash symptoms?
A. Here are some other common ways people describe whiplash;
Sharp pain, aching pain, burning pain, shooting pain, muscle spasms, pain that travels into shoulders or arms, radiating pain, numbness and tingling into arms hands or fingers, pins and needles, difficulty moving head and neck, restrictions in ranges of motion. In extreme cases, whiplash can cause head pain, migraines and dizziness.
Q. Does whiplash only occur from auto accidents?
A. Although whiplash injuries commonly occur from auto accidents, they can result from other forms of trauma as well. Sports injuries, “slip and falls”, being assaulted (violently shaken), and blows or impacts to the head can also cause whiplash.
Q. I was only going 15mph in my car accident, can I get whiplash from such a slow speed?
A. Yes. In my experience whiplash injuries can occur in accidents of speeds as low as 8mph. The angle of impact, whether or not the passenger is wearing a seatbelt, was the passenger surprised by the impact or did they have time to brace themselves, and the physical condition of the passenger are all factors on how an accident affects the body.
Q. What are common treatments for whiplash?
A.
· Rest
· Chiropractic – Considered one of the most effective treatments for whiplash. Significantly helps with pain, muscle spasms, and inflammation associated with whiplash.
· Ice/heat
· Massage
· NSAIDs (i.e. ibuprofen, Motrin)
· Pain medications (Tylenol, Advil, narcotics)
· Physical Therapy
This article does NOT advise taking medications without an evaluation from your doctor. Please consult with a physician before taking any medication.
Q. How Chiropractic treatment can help whiplash?
A. Chiropractic treatment re-aligns the spinal bones that may have misaligned during a whiplash injury. Restoring normal motion to the spine reduces muscles spasms, pain and inflammation. When performed by a board certified Chiropractor, relief of symptoms is a very common outcome. My success rate with whiplash relief is outstanding! Don’t wait another minute if you or a loved one is suffering. You’ve come to the right place for help.
